Learning How to Deal With Learning
Marta Oliveira Alves
Hand painted infographics reveal patterns of frustration and unity within a student Whatsapp group.
Peer relationships and the school environment greatly influence students’ learning experiences. Marta Oliveira Alves conducted an analysis of her class’s WhatsApp group chat throughout the academic year. The active and expressive nature of the chat provided subjective data, which was then visually represented through a hand-painted infographic. This hand-crafted representation captures the ambiguous, non-binary nature of the emotions that shape learning processes. The concentration of ink signifies the unity of the group, while the intensity of the painting gestures reflects the students’ frustration with the institution. Each painting represents a day, arranged in rows leading up to a deadline. The research reveals that as deadlines approach, students become more frustrated with the institution yet more united as a group.
