Reconstructed Visages
Marleen van der Knaap
A collection of panel curtains shows how short-lived marketing posters can be upcycled into long-lasting interior design products.
Working in an eyewear store, Marleen van der Knaap noticed that the brand’s high-end textile advertising posters were destined for the shredder with every change of the season. Due to portrait rights these posters cannot be reused, unless the images are altered beyond recognition. With a laser cutter and hand loom, Marleen started to explore her own new morphing method. Cutting up outdated ads into strips and weaving them into something completely different allowed her to preserve the original colours and textures. The use of a bicoloured warp adds yet another dimension to the renewed arrangements. ‘Reconstructed Visages’ shows how short-lived marketing material can be upcycled into long-lasting interior design products, like panel curtains or room dividers.
