The perpetual burden: Unveiling Chronic Pain Through Kinetic Costumes
Marie Marchal
A collection of costumes express different types of chronic pain and the struggles experienced by those seeking to alleviate the pain.
Chronic pain sufferers often struggle to communicate their pain effectively to others. The subjective nature of their experience makes it difficult to convey the depth and impact of their condition. They can feel isolated and confined within their pain because of a lack of understanding and empathy from those around them. Marie Marchal crafted three costumes that represent distinct types of chronic pain: migraine, bone and visceral pain. In a video performance, these costumes convey how pain affects the body and restricts movement. You see how once the pain emerges, it becomes an inescapable presence, relentlessly impacting the individual. The costumes capture the struggle of people desperately attempting to alleviate their pain, but ultimately finding themselves trapped in more agonizing positions.
