Amphora

Maria Theocharous

"Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided into Greek and Turkish Cypriot regions, separated by the Cyprus Buffer Zone, or 'Green Line', symbolizing ongoing mistrust. 'Amphora' is a ceramic piece created collaboratively by members of both communities, serving as a symbolic invitation for
unity. Crafted from local clay and employing traditional techniques, it stands as a testament to shared cultural roots.

Inspired by the shared ceramic heritage of Cyprus, Amphora embodies a new, proud Cypriot identity formed through togetherness. Named from Greek roots meaning 'two-sided' and 'I carry', Amphora's dual handles reflect the necessary cooperation for Cyprus's prosperity. The project aims to foster reconciliation, encouraging Greek and Turkish Cypriots to reunite around a common cultural artefact, promoting coexistence and mutual respect.
