Piece Of Culture

Shevitsa is a traditional embroidery technique with a rich history in Bulgarian culture, with different symbols linked to beliefs, rituals and the social status of individuals within the community. With ‘Piece of Culture’, Margarita Rangelova combines the art of Shevitsa with ceramics, posing the question of what happens when a traditional craft meets innovation. A series of vessels were created by encasing textile structures in porcelain, and then firing them to allow the textile itself to disappear, leaving imprinted stories from the delicate embroidery in the fragile porcelain. The series of unique objects act as an invitation to search, read, decipher, and interpret the stories embroidered within, unveiling the layers of tradition and transformation embedded in every stitch.
