Amor? Luta! [Love? Fight!]
In Portugal, it is necessary to incessantly challenge and fight against traditional patriarchal values, which constantly question and dismiss women’s issues. Amor? Luta! [Love? Fight!] subverts traditional Portuguese folk costumes with feminist messages, repurposing them to demonstrate nonconformity when worn in the streets, while keeping the intricate properties of their craft. Collaboratively crafted with local women from the designer’s hometown of Viana do Castelo, they reflect on the changing roles of love in notions of labour, homemaking and caring for the family. By refashioning traditional aprons and pouches using symbols of liberation and revolution, the seemingly familiar costumes express the urgency of working towards gender equality.
