City of Memories
Mara Siegel
“The buildings in Belgrade embody the memories of the city”
What: The story of Belgrade’s post-war informal architecture, told by the houses themselves.
Why: After NATO bombed the city in 1999, reactionary urban structures grew out of its ashes. Now, the informal architecture of Belgrade is reliving its past as citizens want to overthrow the current dictatorial regime. Mara Siegel lets the buildings do the talking in an uncommon urban analysis.
How: In a short film, the houses of Belgrade recall their experiences of 20 years ago. How their inhabitants hid inside them, how they fled from terror, and returned home after the war. Now, in 2019, they see what unfolds on the streets and share their concerns.
