Memory as a Space
Lucas Burgos
An audiovisual exploration of the nature of memory, based on the designer’s grandmother’s experience with dementia.
Through a series of visual reconstructions, Lucas Burgos traces moments in the life of his grandmother, who suffers from Dementia. Imagining memory as a space where we gather moments and experiences, a space of depth but also absence, the designer dives into the materialisation and visualisation of memory. The project brings together the aesthetics of different technologies—the voices of relatives as narrators, photographs and VHS tapes, contrasted with 3D visualisations. The sensitive and mindful imagery plays with aspects of memory loss, broken textures and empty spaces. Considering memory as something deeply subjective, 'Memory as a Space' fantasises about the life of the designer’s grandmother Yeya and suggests that memories aren't realistic or accurate images. The project embellishes the past in order to make sense of things, which might otherwise have lost their beauty.
