Ghost

Lu Fan

What you get is what you see – or is it? Lu Fan questions the certainty of things around us. Her ‘Ghost’ project suggests that there is more to reality than meets the eye, even when it comes to everyday objects in our own home. “My work started with the separation of body and mind, which is apparent in fantasy and fairy tales, but also in contemporary technology. In a way, we all live with ghosts in a world that has various layers of reality.”

Lu uses design as a medium to reveal these layers. Ghost aims to break away from our preconceived idea of reality and to broaden our perception of ‘familiar’ surroundings. What if you constantly feel someone is watching you from the wall? Or if you have to reach into a fog to open a drawer? These designs feel familiar yet alien at the same time. Adjusted to resemble passageways to another dimension, they have become ghosts themselves.
