The Distance of A Cigarette
Liping Hua
A multimedia installation introduces a fluctuating measurement system based on the length of a cigarette and the time it takes to smoke it.
E-cigarettes have revolutionized the act of smoking into a quantifiable experience. With its mechanized parts, this smoking simulator no longer depends on burning tobacco, changing the social negotiation of time, space, and context required for the traditional smoking experience. The Distance of a Cigarette explores the intimate moment when two strangers borrow a cigarette to highlight the absurdity of categorical approaches to space and time. By applying a novel measurement system that considers distance in the length of a cigarette, and time by how long it takes to smoke a cigarette, the multimedia installation draws attention to how traditional cigarettes create a convivial shift in proximity and sociality.
