Creatures in Retention

Leo Orta

“These functional fossils reveal the problem with modern life”

What: Functional objects made of disused electronic goods to represent the frightening reality of our consumer behaviour. Why: Recycling electronics has a huge impact on our environment, especially across Southeast Asia. When we get rid of old electronics, we don’t see the damage they cause. By holding on to them, we can’t escape the truth. How: Instead of getting rid of unwanted electronics such as phones and computers, Leo Orta shapes them into beastly creatures that can be used as furniture. In this way, they receive a new life while also acting as a visible reminder of how our wasteful consumption is threatening our existence.
