Worn to Wear

Lena Winterink

“I aim to create more affinity for the materials we use”

What: The more you wear them, the more they grow on you. These garments make a statement against the throwaway mentality in fashion, as they ‘oxidise’ with age. Why: Why not cherish the worn clothes in your wardrobe instead of replacing them with something new? Lena Winterink wants to increase appreciation for the way materials age. By integrating copper into the textile, she adds a sculptural twist with a mesmerising effect: as time passes, the colour changes. How: Lena found a way to weave and knit a copper thread into unbleached cotton, and to silkscreen it with copper ink – and still keep it wearable. Water and sweat will gradually introduce shades of green, showing the beauty of time.
