Faire son Beurre

Léa Cadiou

“Every time we buy food, we are feeding one system or another”

What: A lively database that highlights the voices of men and women who are finding alternatives to industrialised farming to preserve the tradition of Breton dairy farming. Why: Having grown up in a farming family, Léa Cadiou wanted to understand the choices facing dairy farmers today in Brittany, one of the most important agricultural regions in Europe. How: ‘Faire son beurre’, literally ‘making one’s butter’, is a metaphor for ‘making a living’. Investigating the limits and failures of conventional farming, Léa focused on possible solutions. She met various farmers who had found alternatives to the traditional path. Made of various layers of information, from sound to food itself, her installation showcases the resilience of the farming community in Brittany.
