Paperthin

Lauren Leerdam

Exploring the rich industrial history of his hometown Deventer, Lauren Leerdam has experimented with new applications for the technology behind the production of metal cans. His ‘Paperthin’ stool demonstrates how simple techniques transform a weak sheet of material into a sturdy, functional piece of furniture. In two simple steps, the 0.5 mm sheet of steel gains volume and strength: rolling it into a geometrically strong shape and crimping lines into it. The resulting new shape, made by combining old and new technologies, still conveys the essence of the classic tin can.
