Sakura, Episode 71
Sakura, Episode 71 stresses the temporalities of translation and the implications of breaking them. By taking the case study of the anime Sakura and the inaccessibility of its Basque translation due to archival and copyright restrictions, Julia Urreaga Aizarna uses the pre-existing material to address standardization of media contexts in less spoken languages and their hyper-local dialects by prioritizing content. The project recreates Sakura’s translation into Basque from a surviving damaged bootleg version, re-making the script and sound of the lost material. Understanding globalised pop-culture among its gradual versioning through progressive translations, it overlays the diversity of translation in context-specificity, and the questions of what and how this continues to be available.
