A Matter of Autonomy

Julia Laporte

"My dream journey invites people to rethink their surroundings."

WHAT A reinterpretation of autonomy applied to city life. WHY Society relies so heavily on interconnections that a more autonomous existence is unattainable. Or is it? If we think of autonomy as an attitude of wonder and investigation, not as an end, we can engage with our surroundings again. HOW In ‘A Matter of Autonomy’, Julia Laporte explores how we can develop an investigative attitude towards cities. Her machine — a combination of vacuum cleaner, sausage extruder and hotspot — collects freely available and undervalued material such as water, dust and potatoes and turns them into temporary objects. The freedom of intervention offers a vivid approach to the city.
