The New Pavilion

Jochem Zutt

Growing up near the Hondsbossche Zeewering, Jochem Zutt spent a lot of time on the beach building sandcastles. As a designer he took up the challenge for a more serious construction on the new strip of sand that was reclaimed with a dike reinforcement project. In summer this brightly coloured pavilion harbours 50 surfboards, and all the surf dude stuff that comes with it. The surf school owner can drive his quad right through to collect the boards and deliver them at the shoreline. The wooden panels are easily deconstructed with a Meccano-like system when the cold sets in. By leaving the main floor with its bench intact, it becomes a cool resting point and look-out during a winter’s walk.
