The Ebb and Flow of Chinese Female Entrepreneurship
Jiayi Ye
The social and economic impact of the Reform and Opening-up period on Chinese business women since 1978 is explored through a filmed chain-interview.
The Reform and Opening-up period in China since 1978 brought significant social, economic, and cultural changes. One aspect often overlooked is the impact on Chinese women, particularly in business. Jiayi Ye’s investigation reveals that female entrepreneurs emerged as a counterforce to traditional gender roles and stereotypes, transforming the male-dominated business landscape and changing the financial dependency of married women. Through a chain interview presented in an extra-wide video, the project showcases the stories of female entrepreneurs, highlighting how their ventures have challenged societal norms and influenced the perceptions of women in China, both externally and internally.
