Foreign Foraging

Jeannette Weiss

“Like fish swimming in water, now it’s plastic that swims”

What: An environmental (hi)story of the sea told by a character attuned to the materials available in his/her surroundings: the forager. Why: ‘Foreign Foraging’ is based on the factual prediction that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans. The sea slowly transforms from a food source towards a source of materials. How: Handwoven tapestries made of recycled fishing nets and collected pieces of sea plastic, accompanied by a spoken and visualised poem address the complex environmental issue of scarcity (fish) and abundance (plastic) in our oceans on an emotional level.
