Constituent Design

Jasper De Graaf

“I started designing with a product’s afterlife as my first priority”

WHAT Jasper de Graaf has designed a range of household items that can be taken apart into their constituent materials for re-use. WHY In traditional design processes, the concept and aesthetics of a product are in place before the manufacturing details are considered. Decisions are made to get the product to consumers as fast as possible, without much thought for the product’s afterlife. HOW Jasper has overhauled his design approach. Considering manufacturing decisions right from the start has determined the concept development and the aesthetics of his flat-iron, hairdryer and mixer. Their look communicates how the different materials have been put together. Most importantly, it shows they can be easily separated and used again.
