Moving Chairs
Can you imagine walking into an educational institution and finding no chairs? Moving Chairs is a reflection on the Design Academy Eindhoven as an institution branding itself as open-minded. By extracting the school's standardised factory-made chairs for one week, Jarno van Renswoude gave students and staff the opportunity to reconsider how they wanted to sit. The designer was able to advocate for the removal of 250 of the 600 chairs from the Bachelor floor which he then exhibited at the iconic Evoluon building in Eindhoven. Provocatively, the project opens up a discussion about designing chairs, which ‘progressive’ designers might claim to avoid. While the action didn't yield the hoped for impact, the designer created a documentary video which reflects that “the moment we need to change, everyone is just afraid of losing something.”
