Sense of Place
James Murphie
## “In my project I’ve explored sounds’ immeasurable ability to define and determine our sense of place.”
In April 2020, during the lockdown period, James Murphie began working on a project in the garden of his childhood home. His aim was to create a physical device that would bring ambient sound into focus by mirroring the sonic surroundings. The time he spent working on the project in this familiar context provided the basis for ‘Sense of Place’, an online sound installation to which James added visuals taken from his parent’s back garden. The online environment captures a space that during the lockdown became a symbol for a sense of normality and freedom. By creating this project, James intended to reflect this space in a new context, creating a mirror into his world during turbulent times.
