Public Platform — Democratic Social Media for Europe

Jakob Schleenvoigt

In their current form, social media platforms are run by a handful of billionaire-owned technology companies. As a result of this profit-driven business model, there is a serious lack of accountability: they reward addictive interfaces, have invasive tracking of personal data, and allow for a dangerous spread of misinformation. In order to combat these issues, Jakob Schleenvoigt asks: what if there was a public social media platform? If a platform could be owned, funded, and developed by the European Union, would this allow for a more democratic approach to online spaces? Through a website and a physical conversation forum, Jakob invites the public to discuss their concerns, opinions and ideas for what shape this could take.
