City lumberjack
The streets are littered with discarded pallets, many of which have been created for a single shipment. The CO2 stored in the wood of these pallets gets re-released into the atmosphere as they’re turned into lesser quality chip wood or burned for fuel in a plant. Dubbing himself a ‘City lumberjack’, Jakob Josef Rieper collects and remakes pallets into a material stock. All the wood is identified, sorted and catalogued. To demonstrate the material's endless possibilities, Jakob used it to create small furniture pieces. Compared to factory work, this process is slower, more expensive and results in smaller wood stock. However, designers must learn to work within these limitations, as it is an essential skill when working with re-sourced materials.
