An Instagram post made me wonder: Is reproducing still ok?
Inga Hamelmann
An installation of distorted porcelain vessels vocalises the diversity of opinions around the child-free culture.
The growing child-free movement and increased environmental and political calls for voluntary refusal of reproduction indicate a noticeable shift in young Western people’s attitudes towards reproduction. Through the use of porcelain vessels, the installation vocalizes a cacophony of opinions and personal perspectives on the child-free culture, sourced from social media platforms and personal conversations. These perspectives explore its relationship with inherited reproductive norms, new technologies, and current global living conditions. Each distorted vessel represents a break from the standard, mass-produced reproductive norms, similar to industrially-made porcelains created from 'mother molds'. Seeking to foster dialogue, the installation opens up the no-children culture to an emotional dimension that is nurtured by social media dynamics and conservative expectations.
