Recast

Igor Daemen

Think old oak table at a thrift shop: dark brown lacquer and baroque rounded legs. Not quite your style, is it? Igor Daemen looks beyond that tacky layer and sees its true value. Solid oak wood is a very expensive material if you buy it at a timber yard. With ‘Recast’ Daemen gives discarded pieces of furniture a second life. The design intervention is minimal: he takes a table apart, gives it a good rub and reconstructs it again – but not exactly as it was before. By sawing one leg into four equal pieces and casting new joints from used aluminium cans, the table is born again, showing the inner beauty of the original materials.
