The Choker

Hanne Arends

Have you ever felt limited in your freedom these past few years? For Hanne Arends, these limits have felt suffocating, almost like a pair of hands being twisted around her neck. The designer wanted to create beauty within this feeling of constraint, translating the emotion into an elegant table made out of glass. Despite its reputation for breakability and fragility, glass can actually be incredibly durable and strong. Working manually, Hanne designed a large wooden mould and special tool to ‘choke’ a cylinder of molten glass, assuring that every single piece has a unique signature. Additionally, the process of making one table requires a tremendous amount of craftsmanship, focus and teamwork. Together, these different factors help represent the symbolic starting point of the project.
