Hemp-it-Yourself

Hannah Segerkrantz

# “The aim of my project is to encourage the use of natural materials and local, on-demand production.”

Hemp is a versatile and sustainable material, absorbing more CO2 per hectare than any forest or commercial crop. Hemp shives combined with a lime binder make hempcrete, a flexible yet strong material. Inspired by the democratic design philosophy, Hannah Segerkrantz developed a semi-modular system for the DIY production of furniture pieces using hempcrete. The process provides six different shapes that can be combined to create objects of various heights, volumes and functions. When more people around the world start to use the ‘Hemp-it-Yourself’ manual, a network of makers is created. This will shift the focus from the individual designer to a collective, globally exercised local practice in which anyone can be maker, designer and consumer at the same time.
