The Crowded Sea

The ‘German’ North Sea is one of the most heavily trafficked marine areas in the world, and is destined to become a key location for the renewable energy transition. Bordered by seven European countries, this will undoubtedly lead to conflicts regarding environmental protection and economic use, following established hierarchies between humans and marine life. The Crowded Sea is an immersive video installation drawing on design and journalism to address the question: Who owns the sea? It considers how a personal understanding can be obtained of an area that is under geopolitical contention, subject to anthropogenic changes, and affected by ecological crisis with numerous species at risk.
