Break the Mould

When placed in front of light, porcelain reveals a beautiful translucency. Even subtle variations in thickness influence the intensity of light. Haejune Hwang developed a method to create a single porcelain piece with varying thicknesses. As soon as light interacts with it, a palette of shades becomes visible. In slip casting, liquid porcelain is poured into a plaster mould to create porcelain objects. As the plaster mould absorbs water from the liquid clay, it forms a layer of porcelain. A wet plaster mould absorbs less water than a dry one, resulting in a thinner layer. Haejune’s mould is built up of plaster parts which have been soaked in water for differing periods of time. A rich spectrum of shades reveals the delicate beauty of translucent porcelain.
