(De)constructing Family Models
Guus Hoeberechts
When we think of a family, why do we often picture a nuclear one when there are many ways to form strong relationships? Our norms are (re)confirmed by the objects and representations we see every day. By presenting alternative norms, this collection opens up the boundaries we place on the concept of a family. The work takes a cup and transforms it to tell various stories. Each cup carries a unique illustration derived from intimate conversations. They range from abstract images to literal depictions, just as our personal definitions do. The initial collection is an agent to guide further conversations, which could generate more cups, thereby expanding the collection.
