Wanky Wonky
Gerard Lukken
Fascinated by the beauty of downfall and decay, Gerard Lukken started to build with chopped firewood, using nothing but paper tape, heat shrink tubing and rubber to connect the pieces. ‘Wanky Wonky’ challenges standard construction norms: why make things straight and solid, when the thrill lies in that exhilarating moment of finding or losing balance? Depending on the chosen connection, each modular structure shows its own behaviour. Together they form a family of skeleton-like creatures that creak and sway, daring you to touch and use them. Could these be a bookcase, a bedside table or a pergola? Do not worry if they start to fall apart; that is part of the attraction.
