The Sun Also Shines in the City

Frederik Deschuytter

Solar power is increasingly seen as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Yet, considered an eyesore, solar farms are banished to isolated areas where they cannot be seen. Frederik Deschuytter proposes to put them in the spotlight. With ‘The Sun Also Shines in the City’ he situates generators in the midst of the urban landscape. A field of mirrors spread over city rooftops reflects incoming sunlight to a focal point atop a tower. Here, the sunrays are converted into clean energy using Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology. What was once hidden becomes an appealing landmark. Putting this valuable energy source in plain sight can hopefully inspire us to be more careful with how we use it.
