Symbiotic Design
Symbiotic Design' explores the preservation of objects in their natural habitat. While museums conserve artifacts by removing objects from their original contexts, keeping them captive in the controlled atmospheres of archives and exhibitions; Finn van Tol adds protective structures to design icons in order to prevent them from breaking. A 3D-printed rubber exoskeleton wraps around the curves and surfaces, produced to fit the individuality of each object. Referencing parasitic architecture, 'Symbiotic Design' unveils a dialogue with moments in design history: while maintaining their integrity and function for use, through altering their aesthetics, the objects serve as a canvas or pedestal for new design.
