Off the Radar

Ferran Avila

# “What is the relationship between our real self and our virtual self?”

What: A reinterpretation of the myth of Narcissus, drawing a parallel with contemporary self-adoration in the virtual world. Why: Ferran Avila shows that the old myths are still relevant. Replacing the water surface from the story with a pair of modern VR glasses, he compares Narcissus’s obsessive love for his own reflection to self-glorification in the digital realm. How: Inspired by the hip hop scene – a growing ground for ego-boosting – Ferran stages an album release in an aesthetic museum setting. This moving sculpture shows how we can endlessly augment ourselves, building delusionary alter egos that are hard to let go of.
