Altered Order

Emmy Lemmens

# “When you move, the pillar moves with you. This optical play of partly hiding, partly revealing sparks a sense of curiosity.”

What happens when you take the pillar, a timeless architectural element, and split it open – literally – to a play of light and repetition? Emmy Lemmens reveals spatial and sensory possibilities as she transforms pillars into dynamic objects interacting with illumination and shadow, opacity and transparency. The usually solid column is reimagined as an open structure made of laser-cut steel profiles slotted and welded together in interchangeable modules: base, shaft and capital. Referencing the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles of ancient Greece, and the hidden steel reinforcing inside modern structures, the ancient order of the pillar is celebrated, but also sliced, altered and repeated as the forms are bisected and reconfigured.
