Fouté Difé
"How can one address feeling disconnected from one’s roots or lacking knowledge of one’s history? Fouté Difé is a research-based video project and installation based on Emma Bereau’s investigation into her Creole identity and carnival traditions, aiming to reclaim fragmented aspects of her identity in a post-colonial context.
The installation features a film projected onto a screen and a handmade mask, allowing images to interact and creating a dialogue between the different layers of the research. Translated to ‘set the fire’ or ‘liven things up’ in Guadeloupean Creole, Fouté Difé uses the Carnival and its masks and costumes as allegories. It symbolises how layers of cultures, histories and identities can transform into a new heritage. Much like how Guadeloupean society evolves through the carnival—shedding colonial heritage and reinventing itself—the project strives to redefine the designer’s mixed, métissé, history through experimental exploration."
