The Metamorphosis of Craft
Emilie Bordes
## “An object of reflection, this chair represents the plasticised future ahead of us.”
The straw chair is a timeless piece of furniture that can be found all over Europe since the 17th century. It is a rural object, crafted from straw and wood − natural materials that occurred in abundance. Today, with plastic waste taking over the landscape, it can be harvested much like traditional materials. To emphasise this environmental shift, Émilie Bordes incorporates this foraged plastic in a modern version of the archetypal straw chair. The result is ‘The Metamorphosis of Craft’: a contemporary symbol of the new Anthropocene era of human impact, as nature takes a back seat to all that is man-made.
