Landscapes of Intelligence

Elena Marie Dagg

"Landscapes of Intelligence challenges the common perception of Artificial Intelligence as a purely abstract force, detached from the physical world. In reality, AI relies on a complex network of infrastructures and material resources. Water, essential for hardware production and cooling data centres, is one of the most underappreciated of these resources.

The installation creates counter-images to the current portrayals of AI, which often ignore this environmental impact.
A water tank symbolises the essential role of water in AI, from resource extraction to maintaining digital infrastructures.
Alongside, a continuously operating plotter within a server rack draws lines, using an amount of water that reflects estimates of water consumption per image generation. These watercolour-on-paper images evoke landscapes, illustrating how water’s agency can transform abstract algorithms into forms that suggest a natural world beyond the technocratic order."
