When the first lockdown measures to combat Covid-19 were introduced, Dongwook Jang, a South Korean student temporarily based in Slovenia, found himself in a difficult situation because of his foreigner status. He had to make a swift return to the Netherlands, the country of his academy programme, but sudden strict controls and checkpoints made travelling precarious and almost impossible. ‘H38’ is a film that captures his long journey across multiple borders, both physical and mental, and aims to open up a dialogue among viewers. Layered with frustration, boredom and uncertainty, his film highlights the difficulties of border crossings during a pandemic and questions the meaning of barriers through a physical and psychological lens.
