Still-Death

Daniel Elkayam

"Still-Death is an installation of innocent and everyday objects that, on closer inspection, are intimately connected to themes of loss and suicide. Each carefully curated item symbolises a facet of this complex emotional landscape, acting as witness or actor in different scenes of self-harm. The installation provides space for the audience to project on to the work their relationships with death, engaging with the raw reality of loss and the social constructs surrounding suicide, a subject often shrouded in stigma and silence.

The project situates itself within the artistic tradition of still life and carries a symbolic meaning that helps to mediate Daniel Elkayam’s journey of loss following his father’s suicide. It encourages viewers to explore nuanced reflections and thoughts on death and the uncanny nature of ambiguous loss."
