The Carrier
‘The Carrier’ is Chelsea Hsu’s personalised driving interface. Departing from current technological trends within the automotive industry, Chelsea explores the future of information systems in cars. She has created a system for transferring information to the driver by integrating smartphone screen culture with dashboard design and augmented reality.
A car with a self-driving function does not remove the driver from his or her role, but it does improve the quality and safety of the driving experience and time we spend in cars. ‘The Carrier’ shows how in the future, drivers will be able to select which information appears on their windshield dashboard. The display can be simple, more complex, or fully detailed: it is up to the driver to select a mode that fits the situation. Even the driving assistance system can be anthropomorphically adapted to create a personal assistant.
Automation might not fundamentally change the value of cars, nor will it make the driver obsolete. But this design demonstrates how it will create new conditions for personal transportation.
