Circular Landscape

Charlie Flotho

After more than 100 years of production, the ENCI Mergelgroeve, the first and only cement quarry in the Netherlands near Maastricht, is transformed into a natural reserve and recreational area open to the public. Departing from research into the local limestone (Limburgse Mergel) and its inherent qualities, Charlie Flotho developed a construction technique using waste sediment in the quarry to build monolithic seating elements on site.  Located next to water channels, the elements form a space to experience the interaction between limestone and water. Over time, each seating element deteriorates, allowing the material derived from the site to return to its geological cycle.
