Ways of Seeing

Caroline Schmidt

# “Our eyes work in a certain way, but there are many other rich and varied – but invisible – ways in which the world is seen.”

On a hot summer’s afternoon, a tick sits waiting for a warm-blooded creature. A fly navigates through a kitchen searching for remains of breakfast. ‘Ways of Seeing’ takes the viewpoint of three animal species that are close to us but considered repulsive or invasive. Moving away from the human perspective, Caroline Schmidt’s analogue photography steps into the perceptual world of a rat, a tick and a fly. Using different materials and techniques to replicate the visual qualities in the way they see the world, she creates narrative sets of images that hint gently at our tendency to take the human-perceived reality as the only reality.
