Keep it in Mind

Anne Stroom

When Anne Stroom’s grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, the designer was surprised to see sufferers given children’s toys to keep them occupied. She found the image of adults using such garish playthings rather depressing. With ‘Keep it in Mind: Tractable Games’ Stroom creates alternatives with a more grown-up aesthetic without compromising on fun. Her table boules are made of painted wood and metal and there is a colourful pompom catapult made to launch from a Zimmer frame. The games foster social interaction and can be done without help, which is important for a sense of self-worth and to stimulate cognitive skills. They are easy enough for all, no matter how advanced the affliction.
