Winner Planetree Design Award 2022

The winner of the Planetree Design Award 2022 is Juliette Vandermosten with Meanders. Meanders is a conversation tool in the form of a collaborative board game. It aims at opening up the conversation around dementia to help families reconnect and recreate relationships of mutual care, shifting the care for dementia from a person-focussed approach to a systemic and holistic one.

Developed in collaboration with the speech therapists from Aan Den Hofpad, it uses the mechanics of a board game and the joy it creates to open a space for vulnerability, which allows the participants to open up about their needs, worries and expectations. It is not a therapy tool, it doesn’t offer solutions. It only provides a space for the participants to take the time to listen to each other and reconnect.

"Meanders is a very applicable concept, where we also see possibilities for other groups than people with dementia,” said the jury. “The power of the tool is that you build something together, which eventually becomes a whole. It offers various ways to connect people.”

The winner was announced during the Mental Health for All seminar at Dutch Design Week. Juliette Vandermosten received € 2500, and a goblet designed by Willem van Hooff in collaboration with clients of GGzE De Boei.

About the Planetree Design Award

The annual Planetree Design Award is a collaboration between Design Academy Eindhoven and mental health institution GGzE which seeks ideas that pave the way to a more inclusive society.

The first edition of the Planetree Design award took place in 2021, following a period of online lectures and workshops. In 2022, 127 MA students and 13 DAE tutors took part in similar lectures and workshops, looking at health issues from their design-oriented critical and creative perspectives. Supported by a team of 16 GGzE-experts, the students followed the institution’s daily work with clients and employees and had a chance to learn from their experiences, difficulties, and ambitions.

All DAE students were eligible to submit ideas via an open call, which invites proposals that add concrete value to the mental health of vulnerable citizens of Brabant. The aim of the Planetree Design Award is to build a bridge between students of DAE and clients of GGzE, to strengthen local collaboration and community.
