DAE collaborates with LINA on workshops and roundtable

Hosted by MA Social Design and BA Silva Systems and open to all MA and BA students, on 16 & 17 May 2024, DAE welcomed LINA fellows Anna Perugini, Nuno Vasconcelos, and Baukreisel for a two-day workshop and roundtable discussion.

The workshops were conducted simultaneously, followed by a roundtable discussion, after which all participating students and fellows had dinner together. The workshops covered material research and experimentation with earth construction, led by Nuno Vasconcelos, and delve into research methodologies fostering connections between design, social, and ecological practices, guided by Anna Perugini.

Earth resources as Building Material with Nuno Vasconcelos

This workshop focused on urban resources and existing logistics to (re)use earth/soil as media for design and construction. Students discussed the flows in-out of the city and its impact as well as exploring characteristics of the material, mixes and compositions.

Collaging Realities with Anna Perugini

This workshop aimed to explore research methodologies that cultivate connections between design, social, and ecological practices. Using the medium of collage, students were be encouraged to analyse and reimagine design systems, processes, and materials.

Roundtable discussion with LINA fellows: Anna Perugini / Nuno Vasconcelos / Baukreisel moderated by Lukas Wegwerth and Moritz Maria Karl

The event concluded with a roundtable discussion between the three LINA fellows, as well as co-organisers Moritz Maria Karl and Lukas Wegwerth.

Fellows shared their work and the challenges linked to working with suppliers, craftsmen and with locally available materials. They addressed challenges in having access to local materials and how not to exploit cheap labour, as well as how to intervene in the supply chain and logistics of materials that are difficult to transport such as raw earth.

They asked: how to communicate the work to a local audience and how to convince local decision makers such as politicians? How to assess the local impact of your design practice? How to organize funding for projects and different types of funding in different European countries (Portugal, Italy, Germany, Netherlands) How to set up your own design practice (individual designer, collective, NGO, etc), what are the benefits and what are potential barriers? Overall, the roundtable provided a space for explorative discussion and critical thought between the three fellows.
