The Light Charmer
Amy Lewis
If I am the machine, what can I do that an industrial braiding machine cannot? Amy Lewis used the traditional Japanese hand-braiding technique of Kumihimo to explore the tactile and expressive qualities of combined materials. Approaching light as a material that got entangled in her manual braiding machine, she re-invented the Japanese lantern. ‘The Light Charmer’ focuses on the interplay between the mechanical approach to design and the intuitive approach where you can evoke feeling and emotion. By day, the light silently dwells in its confinement of wood and paper. Yet under the cover of darkness, it comes to life as it twists and turns to break free.
