Studio Turn Around
TURN AROUND and LOOK AHEAD.
Led by designer Vic Cautereels, Studio Turn Around is one of 11 studios that make up the BA department at Design Academy Eindhoven in the 2022-23 academic year.
We envision designers to have a natural urge to innovate and have a strong curiosity to learn how things work, how things come apart and how parts can be reused as a material source for future products. We want to challenge ourselves and our students to create concepts that are unique and innovative while being proof that both functions and esthetics are visible and meaningful.
In the Studio, we have built up a lot of experience exploring the fundamentals of a circular society and gained knowledge about how to create attractive, sustainable solutions for everyday life. One of the challenges of today's designers is to rethink our consumption patterns that have created a system of mass waste production.
We encourage students with a forward-looking mindset and an interest in life-enhancing technologies to participate in the programme of Studio Turn Around, to design radical concepts with great empathy for people and with an undeniable impact on the world. Design for a society where technology enables the well-being of individuals and communities.
In Studio Turn Around, students will learn how to create product experiences that are essential, pure and sometimes frugal, but also daring, sometimes loud, sometimes silent, but always surprising, original and unexpected. We create a learning environment where a straightforward, no-nonsense approach goes hand in hand with a humoristic or poetic approach.
The creation process in Studio Turn Around is one that navigates through a number of recommended, mandatory and optional steps but in the first place will be an exercise to help students discover their own, unique design process. A pro-active attitude and knowing what they are doing is half the work. Ideate and explore through making, sketching, making our hands dirty, using 3D software or the Studio’s very own 3D printer. Students will create with their hands, their heads and their hearts.
TURN AROUND and LOOK AHEAD.
