DAE@SaloneSatellite Presents: “X”

How do we educate designers for an uncertain future, when the stakes feel higher than ever? Embracing X, both as a symbol for the unknown and a signifier of collaboration, Design Academy Eindhoven seeks out and explores diverse realities through wide-ranging forms of practice, criticality and collaboration.

In this spirit, DAE has been invited to participate in SaloneSatellite 2023 – the exhibition at Salone del Mobile dedicated to young designers – with an experimental, live radio project led by its students, staff and alumni.

Student-led initiative Elevator Radio will collaborate with DAE’s in-house editorial team to create a week-long programme of public debates, discussions and workshops, inviting the Salone’s design community to voyage into the unknown together.

PROGRAMME

Elevator Radio x DAE will be a week-long radio production. The SaloneSatellite stand will become a site for research, production and engagement. Transformed into a broadcasting platform, it will host a series of live conversations with fellow schools and students, industry professionals and critics, and DAE tutors and alumni, exploring areas of tension and unease within design and design education.

Combining research, production and engagement, each day will be framed by a theme:

  • Crisis x Critique
  • Words x Objects
  • Known x Unknown
  • Individual x Algorithm
  • Public x Private
  • Performance x Production

The programme will also engage with fundamental questions surrounding Milan Design Week and others like it: in a world of “peak stuff”, imminent material scarcity, and escalating climate crisis, how can we rethink the very existence of the Design Fair?

Connecting Milan Design Week to the everyday life and concerns of the design school, the broadcast schedule will include moments of connection between Eindhoven and the Fiera with live phone-ins and student- and alumni-produced shows generated via an open call.

The “doors” of the space will be open to all other schools and students participating in Salone Satellite 2023 to learn new skills through workshops run by the Elevator Radio team.

To reduce the footprint of the project, the stand will be designed entirely with materials that already exist or that would otherwise be considered waste. Leftover materials after SaloneSatellite will be donated to DAE’s Material Bank for reuse in student projects.

Highlights include:

  • Daily live editorial meetings taking place at 10am, which will be open to passers by and visitors to the Salone.
  • Daily live roundtable discussions exploring each of the programme’s themes, with alumni, designers and critical voices. Participants include Alice Stori Liechtenstein, Alexandre de LaSalle, Delany Boutkan, Bom Noh, Ginevra Petrozzi, Ines Borovac, Libby Sellers, Maarten Baas, Mario Minale (Minale-Maeda), Max Fraser (Dezeen), Noemi Biasetton, Oli Stratford (Disegno) and more…
  • Live nature tours of the Salone each day.
  • Roaming reports from several DAE Alumni key locations around Milan
  • Radio essays and audio experiments by DAE students and alumni.
  • Daily live-phone ins, connecting students in Eindhoven to the Salone.
